Healthy Over 40 - 3 Tips to Stick to Your Diet
Americans spend about $35 billion a year on weight-loss products to try and stay fit and healthy. Yet, all too often, after trying to follow weight loss programs, failure is often the outcome Why? Usually it is not the diet, but the lack of sticking to the diet. How can you beat the odds and stick to your diet and be successful?
Here are 3 tips to help you stick to your diet so you can be healthy and fit over 40.
Be Reasonable - Choosing a diet that is very drastic and different from how you eat will not only be daunting, but most likely you will fail. Suddenly becoming a vegan or only juicing has its benefits, but will be harder to maintain in the long run. Yes, you do need to eat more vegetables and good protein and high fiber, but try and pick what you like. Your success rate will be much higher. As well, at times it is good to slowly change the way you eat--not overnight. Make a few changes in your diet and once you are use to it, introduce a few others. The goal is to make this a permanent way of eating and one you will learn to enjoy.
Plan Ahead - Planning meals ahead of time is vital if you are to stick to your diet plan. You do not necessarily need to plan every meal, but make sure that what you have available in your refrigerator or at your desk is part of your diet. It is a good idea to have healthy snacks when you need a lift before your next meal. A mixture of nuts and dried fruit can come in handy, as well as drinking lots of water throughout the day. It is also better to plan and eat than to skip all together.
Reward Yourself - The hardest part about dieting or just trying to eat healthy is sticking to your good intentions. How can you stick to it without all the heartache? Simple--learn to reward yourself. We are just like children--if you keep saying no, eventually you are going to cave in. It is important to reward yourself for good behaviour. Why not pick one day during the week as your "cheat" day where you can choose one thing to eat that you have been craving that is not part of your diet? Then, if you are good all week, you can have your reward. It really helps to keep you on your diet and keep you consistent.
If you want to be successful in any diet--whether for weight loss or healthy reasons--the key is to stick to the diet. Although this can seem daunting at times, you can be successful if you are reasonable in your food and exercise choices, if you plan ahead, and if you learn to reward yourself. Yes, you can be healthy and fit over 40!
