Weight Loss Workout For Men Over 40

The older we get, the more difficult it seems to lose the extra weight that is put on over the years. Being over the age of 40 can make weight loss seem like a daunting task but it doesn't have to be at all. The methods for shedding pounds is effective for men of any age. Yes, diet and exercise are the main components but how you perform them is what makes the difference.

Below I will explain how to workout in a more efficient manner that burns more fat in less time. One thing that I like to point out is that there is no such thing as spot reduction. People often fall for the marketing that is often on television for ab machines. The commercials make it seem as though just working out your ab muscles will help to burn stomach fat.

In order to burn fat, you must build muscle. Resistance training is the best workout for this. There are several ways you can build muscle. My favorite is by using my own body weight. Several good exercises include:

  • Calisthenics
  • Plyometrics
  • Weight lifting
  • Interval training
Calisthenics are body weight routines that can include push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, lunges, squats, jumping jacks, and more. Plyometrics are often used by athletes. These exercises are designed for fast and powerful movements usually to improve a specific training goal such as developing speed. Weight lifting is simply the practice of lifting weights (free-weights or machines.) Interval training is a way to perform several exercises back to back for a set and resting for a minute or so in between sets.

All of these workouts burn fat well and when you combine interval training, you can get a full-body workout done in about 45 minutes. Using free-weights is also a better option than relying on weight machines. The machines limit the movements of body parts whereas free-weight movements mimic what you do on a daily basis.

If you do enjoy cardio workouts such as running, you can still perform them on the days you are not building muscle. Keep in mind that too much cardio runs the risk of muscle loss. Spending an hour or longer doing cardio isn't necessary. Most important is to keep your workouts fun. Find new body weight routines that you can add to your workouts to keep them fresh.

The equipment needed is minimal. I recommend dumbbells (light and heavy), adjustable bench, jump rope, elastic bands, and medicine ball.

Getting fit when you are over 40 presents some challenges not faced by a younger person. As we approach middle age keeping fit and healthy is not the same as it was when we were in our twenties and thirties. For some of us, it may even be payback time for all those unhealthy lifestyle choices we made when we could burn the candle at both ends. As we pass the 40 mark, we gain weight more easily and find it harder to lose than we once might have done. Our busy modern lifestyle makes it a challenge to eat healthily and taking regular exercise; more often than not we take insufficient exercise and grab the most convenient meal, irrespective of whether that is the healthy option.

We are not all from the same mould and we each have our own issues and requirements for our personal health. What we have in common is that we need to have a healthy diet and to take exercise.

There are five main barriers to staying fit over 40. The first of which is:

Your idea of the "perfect" body

You were born with a set of "factory settings" that are unique to you. One of which is your optimum weight. By the time we have reached forty, we have had years of conditioning about what is the perfect body to which we should aspire. We have been bombarded with one diet fad after another for so long that we have forgotten that we are fighting against what nature intended for us; we are trying to change our "factory settings". We have forgotten that if we work with our bodies, instead of against them, we will get the results we desire more quickly and be able to maintain them more easily.

Once you accept the body you were born with you can return to your normal weight as nature intended without being on a perpetual weight loss diet. The perfect body for you is the one programmed into your "factory settings". Accepting the body you were born with will set you free from the treadmill of following one diet after another in your attempts to be someone else's idea of the perfect body.

Exercise Over 40 - How to Use Exercise When You Are Over 40 to Regain Your Body Strength

That means your body will be stronger and will become more muscular.

Why is it important to have more muscle when you are over 40? Because, your body will burn less fat in this age. In other words, your metabolism will be lower. Having more muscle in your body improves your metabolism rate. You will burn more fat even you just sit still.

Apart from doing the two types of exercise, you will need to know how to do them correctly. This is essential especially for those who did not do exercise earlier in their life. So, most of us will not some coach or more information on exercise over 40. With the right approach, you can have fit and healthy life when you are over 40.

No matter what your age, if you are over 40, or over 50 and beyond, you can still lose weight and burn fat. With the fit over 40 weight loss approach, you can develop the mindset needed to help lose fat and get fit at any age. Just look at the incredible inspirational stories.

I recently spoke with coach and fitness professional, Jon Benson, who is living proof of the fit over 40 methods, as a mere seven years ago he was clinically obese and near death. Having lived through obesity, and having beat it, allows Jon to relate to so many others and what they are going through.

Today, Jon is an internationally recognized transformation lifecoach, specializing in mental strategies for the excellence lifestyle, fat-burning nutrition and superior physical fitness.

CB: Jon, for a lot of people at any age, the biggest problem is getting over the inertia of starting. Any tips? And do they differ for someone like yourself that had been in fitness before compared to someone getting fit for the first time?

JB:
Craig, I would start by encouraging anyone interested in changing their body, no matter what their age may be, to change their mind first.

What I mean by that is simply this: we excel at what we 'become'.

We dabble at what we 'participate in'.

Most people want to "participate" in fitness. Perhaps join a health club, get a trainer, go on a diet, and so-on. Yet everyone on the planet would answer YES to this question: "Do you want to be fit
for the rest of your life?"

Think about it: Can you be 'anything positive' for the rest of your life when you dabble at what you seek? No.

So, to get over the inertia of starting a fitness program, I encourage what I call "Core Linking".

Core Linking is covered in my book, "Fit Over 40". This is where you attach your deepest Core Values to a specific fitness and nutritional goal. Then you "Personalize" these objectives into a
what I call a "State of Becoming."

You 'become' your goal. Rather than "achieving" a goal, which for most is followed by an immediate cessation of the lifestyle patterns they used to become successful, I say 'become' your goal.

Become "a body-shaper." Label yourself as a "bodybuilder", "body-shaper", "physical culturist", "athlete", whatever! Create a label that FORCES your goal to be LARGER THAN YOU.

This engages the subconscious mind to a remarkable degree. It challenges you in ways that prevent things like "boredom" or excuses like, "I don't feel like it" from getting in your way.

All of this begins with the power of The Core.

Oh, by the way -- it doesn't matter if you're a newbie or a seasoned bodybuilder, Core Leveraging works to achieve and become whatever you desire.

CB: So Jon, how do you help people stick with the plan? We all know motivation wanes quickly as results slow down. Any tips?

JB:
Believe it or not, I really don't believe in motivation. "I believe in inspired, consistent action."

Motivation is short-term. I can motivate just about anyone with a good speech or perhaps an emotionally-charged piece of music. But is this long-term? Hardly.

The truly successful, at anything in life, are self-governed and intrinsically motivated. Actually, they are "inspired" -- and that's the ticket beyond the motivational trap.

Don't get me wrong -- we all need motivation from time to time. But I like to think of it as sugar. It's quick fuel that burns out just as quickly.

Inspired action, which comes when you develop your Core, sticks around for the long haul.

Inspired action makes a guy like Lance Armstrong take on the Tour de France after going through the worst cancer imaginable. Inspired action drives a boxer to continue a fight with a broken jaw. And,
inspired action will PULL YOU toward a goal.

The opposite is a feeling of "I have to." This is a "push". We want to be PULLED. It starts with inspired action, not motivation.

CB: And finally, what nutrition and training changes have you noticed at different stages in your life and in the experiences of the success stories in your book? Do the nutrition principles change at all? What about training and recovery?

JB:
As you age, your body tends to process carbohydrate more reluctantly.

There are exceptions of course, but for the most part people with any issues with bodyfat to begin with should curtail their intake of carbs.

This may not mean a "low-carb" diet, but they certainly work if you enjoy protein foods as I do.

Cranking up the protein, the water, and various forms of cardio can allow just about anyone at any age to get the fat off and build muscle.

I'm building plenty of muscle at 43 -- more so than I did at 33. The body fat comes off a bit slower, but not much...that is when I consume a higher protein, controlled carb, moderate fat diet with intense and brief weight training sessions.

I am currently experimenting with daily cardio sessions which vary in intensity. Some are longer at 65% MHR, others are 30 minutes at 85%. So far, so good.

Bottom line: If you eat and think properly, as I discuss in Fit Over 40 (the mind is a huge part of all of this), your body can respond like it did when you were 20.

CB: Thanks Jon, that is greatly appreciated. Any final comments for today's interview? I'm sure we'll be talking more in the future.

JB:
My system of Caloric Rotation allows for muscle building and the burning of bodyfat to happen at the same time. In order to get the body you want, you want to gain lean muscle. That gives you the
curves you seek, plus keeps your bones nice and strong.

You 'also' want to burn off excess bodyfat. Otherwise you'll never see the muscle you are building. Once you do that, you're "toned". In short, you become a fat-burning machine.

So "mentally let yourself do this". Mentally give yourself "permission". That sounds strange, but it's actually part of my System. The mind must be engaged or the body will not follow.

Why is Weight Loss Important to You?

Nowadays it appears that everyone is on a diet, trying to lose weight for one reason or another. The reasons vary from individual to individual. I have been in the business of helping people lose weight and get in shape for several years now and I think I have heard most every reason possible. The fact is they are ALL good reasons if you yourself believe they are and if the reason motivates you to take action and keep on track.

One of the most common reasons I hear from clients that want to drop some pounds and get into better shape is that they want to look better and feel better as well as they want to have more energy. OK, that is actually 3 things, but they all seem to go together. This is quite possible and in fact is almost unavoidable if the exercise and nutrition plan that you use is one that you can enjoy without too many major changes too quickly.

I really like using Jon Benson's plan Simply Eat as it combines exercise and diet as well as gives you tips on controlling your appetite, and has various journals and methods for actually measuring your progress. If you are over 40 like me (I am 56) Tom Venuto in collaboration with Jon Benson has an e-book out that does much the same thing for a more mature audience called Fit Over 40.

While there are a few people out there that are actually too thin, the most common health problem in the US and most countries is being overweight or even obese. So let's take a good look at some of the other benefits of Weight Loss.

People that are more fit tend to live longer; those that are more fit tend to have less bodyfat. The great news is that some small changes can make huge improvements. Even a small amount of exercise combined with more healthy food choices can improve not only the quality of your life but also increase the length of it.

People that are more fit tend to think much clearer and have a sharper mind. Studies have shown that people that are more fit going into their later years tend to remain mentally sharp longer, and have considerably less instances of such diseases as Alzheimer's.

In 1932 a study done in Scotland 460 men and women were given mental and physical tests at age 11 and age 79. Those with the highest scores on the fitness tests scored higher on the mental tests also in both age groups. The more fit they were in old age the more mentally sharp they were also.

People that are physically fit also tend to have less episodes of depression. Depression is caused by an imbalance in the chemicals that transport signals between nerve cells, causing sadness. Study after study has shown strong links to depression and obesity. If you are depressed you are more likely to be obese, and if you are obese it is more likely that you are or will become depressed.

It also is well known that exercise can help relieve stress. My wife and I ride our bicycle each morning; she will be the first to tell you that those bike rides help her tremendously in dealing with the stress of taking care of our two handicapped boys as well as our two grandchildren.

Exercise along with a healthy nutrition plan can really help boost your energy levels. Just like an automobile, your body will work better if your use better fuel and take good care of it. You do this through a quality nutrition plan and a reasonable exercise plan.

I am not telling you that you have to exercise 4 hours a day or look like a professional body builder to be healthy. Simply do some healthy exercise daily and make healthier choices when it comes to food. Ryan Lee has developed a great program that will work great for the majority of people, it is called bodybot.

Why is it Hard to Lose Weight After 40?

As we age it seems like we put on weight twice as fast as we do trying to lose it. Doesn't it seem like everything you eat causes you to gain weight? This may happen for various reasons. One reason is because as we become older, our metabolism tends to slow down. Other reasons could be due to medical issues such as a thyroid problem. However, for the most part, it could be just the common "middle-age spread." You probably know it well. It's when we begin to put on weight in our stomachs, buttocks, and thighs. There are ways to combat weight gain and get down to a healthy weight without struggling to do it.

Ask Yourself These Questions

This may seem like common sense but it's important to figure out your own health patterns.

1. Do you exercise less?
2. Are you eating more?
3. What types of foods are you eating?

These questions are important because they have a lot to do with why it is difficult to lose weight in general but even more so after 40 years of age.

Get moving - If you are not exercising, you should probably create a workout plan for yourself. It doesn't need to be a strenuous program, especially if you haven't exercised for a long period of time. Your doctor should be able to give you a beginner's exercise plan. For the most part, you can start off with walking for 20 minutes per day and increasing your time as you improve.

Eating better food - One big mistake that people make is they begin to starve themselves hoping the lack of food will make them lose weight faster. Starving isn't necessary. Two excellent eating plans that help people lose weight almost effortlessly are the clean eating plan and the paleolithic (caveman diet) plan. Either eating plan works well for many people because they promote foods that are fresh and never processed. These are the types of food we should be eating - more vegetables, fruit, nuts, and lean meats.

How we eat will determine how much weight we lose even more so than exercise alone. One final note - try not to get caught up in the tv ads about ab machines that will help you lose weight. They are marketing spot reduction which doesn't exist. Save yourself money and time by avoiding them.

Staying Fit Over Forty

Now in my 50's, I learned the hard way that you cannot train the same as you did in your twenties. For one thing, you have more responsibilities and less time. The other thing is that you probably do not recover as quickly as you might have in your late teens and early twenties. So, the practice of training the same way, day in and day out is a sure way to become stale and frustrated. While training, like running, the same time and distance every day is admirable, you can get better results by varying your training.

One of my training buddies, who used to compete in cycling on an international level, showed me how to use interval training to improve my running. Instead of plugging with distance running, I would run for one minute and walk for one minute over the same distance. I trained less, but got better results. It was a bit uncomfortable the first few times, but I quickly improved and got more done in less time.

When you cross the big 4-0, you might find that you have to give your joints and tendons more time to recover. This is not a ticket to slack off. Again, you just have to be smarter when you train. If you are going to run, stay on sand, grass or gravel. One of my clients, who had recovered from a broken pelvis, could run on sand without much discomfort. After a month, she could run several hundred meters on the sand while carrying her 6 year old son on her back.

Cross-training is another way to keep training fresh and spare your joints. An article in Runner's World once mentioned how several runners improved their time by cross training with cycling rather than just running alone. I found that my own running improved by alternating my running with cycling.

Another area that the over 40 person should practise is strength training. Strength training or "resistance-training" is highly under-rated for conditioning. Often thought of only for "showy muscles" and "body beautifuls," strength training has several benefits that endurance training does not. Strength training builds bone density and increases the body's anabolism, which is the ability to repair and rebuild itself.

Another aspect of strength training that is almost always over-looked is the balance and posture muscles. These can be trained through methods such as martial arts, pilates and power yoga. Now before anyone starts writing off pilates and power yoga as "too Hollywood," keep in mind that these systems work. Pilates inventor, Joseph H. Pilates was an accomplished athlete who trained such celebrities as world class boxer, Max Schmeling. As for power (Ashtanga) yoga, I can vouch for it for removing back pain. One of my trainees, a former RCR soldier told me that he went from 3 chiropractor visits per week to only one per month just from our twice weekly power yoga sessions.

Another good body maintainer is the sauna. While often mistaken for a method for losing weight, regular saunas will clean out the excess toxins, increase your immune system T-cells and help calm you. It is great on a Sunday evening a few hours before bed time.

More tips to get more mileage out of the over 40 frame:

• Eat good natural food. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain massive amounts of anti-oxidants to slow down the aging process.

• If necessary, employ the services of physical therapists: massage, physiotherapist, chiropractic and even acupuncture.

• Supplements such as: fish oils, glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate assist some people with joint pain.

• Keep the alcohol, tobacco and caffeine to a minimum. This stuff overworks your adrenalin glands which are suppose to help carry you into old age.

• Avoid refined foods like white sugar and white flour. It just plugs up your intestines.

• Avoid extended periods of sitting. Too much sitting is hard on the spine and can contribute to DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis).

• Stay active. In an era where everything seems to have a warning label, there should be one on the human butt: Warning: Keep moving or equipment will fail.
